Bluebirds are small thrushes. Found only in North America there are three species of bluebirds: Eastern, Western, and Mountain.The breeding ranges vary for all three species. Eastern Bluebirds are found in southern Canada to the Gulf states, as well as in southeastern Arizona to Nicaragua. Western Bluebirds are found in California, the southern Rocky Mountains, New Mexico, and Arizona, as well as in parts of Mexico. Mountain Bluebirds are found across western North America as far north as Alaska, as well as in central Mexico. Adult males have striking blue plumages, whereas females are mostly grayish-brown with tinges of blue on wings and tail. Look for the rusty-orange breast on male Eastern and Western Bluebirds. Bluebirds nest in cavities and will use nest boxes. Mealworms at backyard feeders will attract some bluebirds.
